Tree fern

 Cyathea macarthurii


A tall endemic tree fern with a trunk 2 to 5 m high, shaggy from persistent frond bases; a distinguishing feature is the dark brown to black hairs at stipe bases. Common in moist shaded areas of the southern mountains from sea level to mountain tops. Mainly tropical genus of  600 species, extending south to NZ, Chile and South Africa. Eleven species on mainland Australia, all on the tropical and temperate east coast.
